Throughout this site we use many technical terms, and given the breadth of readership our site enjoys, sometimes we are remiss and incorrectly assume everyone knows what we are referring to. For those that do not, here are some explanations of the technical terms use. |

Damper
Device used in a suspension system to damp down the natural vertical oscillations of the vehicle caused by its passing over bumps in the road. It converts into friction, and hence heat, the energy which otherwise could build up and make the vehicle unmanageable and dangerous. Earlier dampers used friction linings, but modern dampers are hydraulic. On independent suspension systems the damper is frequently an integral part of the suspension. |
