Automotive Dictionary: Damper

Damper

Device used in a suspension system to damp down the natural vertical oscillations of the vehicle caused by its passing over bumps in the road. It converts into friction, and hence heat, the energy which otherwise could build up and make the vehicle unmanageable and dangerous. Earlier dampers used friction linings, but modern dampers are hydraulic. On independent suspension systems the damper is frequently an integral part of the suspension.
