The 1981 season wasn't going to see a repeat of the previous year. Dick Johnson had a reputed 100 horsepower advantage over the Commodore and Brock was eager to homologate his 'HDT Special Edition' Commodore with heads and inlet manifolding. But numbers just weren't there.Despite the disadvantage, the Marlboro HDT driver won three of the eight ATCC races and stood a big chance of taking the title with a win at the final round.

The 1981 Bathurst was one of the greatest races ever. Dick Johnson cemented his first national championship in a torrid encounter that saw the pair fight tooth and nail to the flag. Apart from the Bathurst race being shortened due to the multi-car pile-up, the Holdens could only fare fourth and fifth in the declared result. The Garry Rodgers / Clive Benson-Brown and Alan Browne / Tony Edmondson cars were the leading Holdens, despite both being involved in the accident.

The then-current Formula One champ, Alan Jones, made a historic appearance in Warren Cullen's Commodore. Unfortunately, the venture was ill-fated and the car retired shortly after Jones took the wheel. The opening laps of the race were a torrid affair with Johnson, Bartlett, Brock and Morris (Falcon) hard at it. But Brock was soon in trouble with rear-end problems, while the second Marlboro HDT car of Harvey and Vern Schuppan crashed while leading.
