The British Eagle

The Hodgson make had a certain amount of success in North of England events in the middle and late 'twenties, and was also known as the "The British Eagle." It was primarily marketed as a racing car, but sports and sports-touring versions were later added. The side-valve 1496-c.c. (69xl00-mm.) Anzani was the power unit, and a supercharged version could be had to special order. Suspension was by semi-elliptic at the front and a novel form of adjustable springing at the rear. The four-speed gearbox had ratios of 3.9, 5.7, 8.1 and 14.5 to 1, and a single dry-plate clutch was used; four-wheel brakes were on all models. The sports version was capable of 90 m.p.h., whilst the supercharged cars were reputed to touch the century mark.

Not many Hodgson cars were sold in the South of England, sales being mainly concentrated around Leeds, the city of its birth. The sports and racing models appeared to do quite well in sand-racing events, but there is no record of their achieving anything in track or road-racing.
