A Fundamental Rethink of the Executive Car

Unlike the revisions made to me Cortina in 1976, and the Capri in 1978, Ford's Granada of 1977 was a more fundamental rethink of their large executive car. The Granada was immensely successful after its introduction in 1972, selling over 850,000. By 1978, however, it appeared dated and by Ford standards some re-design was overdue.

The most striking change was in the new bodyshell which, like the Cortina, was given a lower bonnet line and a greater glass area. The nose section was elongated, helping to eliminate the blunt look of the old Granada, and making the new model far more elegant. While the new body was certainly more attractive some of its greatest assets were not apparent to the eye.

The re-shaping had reduced the lift at the front of the car by an appreciable seventeen per cent, but the corresponding improvement at the back was a significant 37 per cent, and this alone was a major step in the right direction eliminating a lot of the vague floating feel that marred the previous model.

As part of the rationalisation programme of Ford in Europe, it was decided that the German built V6 should replace the old British Essex V6 in the larger engined cars. The German engine was a more recent design than the British one, but more important it was lighter and more economical, and as the new Granada production took place exclusively in Germany it made sense to discard the British engine.

In mainland Europe, a 1.7 litre V4 was originally available. Internally within Ford, the "Cologne" 1.7, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.8 units were the last derivatives of the 'V-Taunus' range of engines. The coupé was discontinued when the new model began production, although there was a 2-door saloon version in certain European markets. A relatively low number of vehicles were also produced with the Peugeot 504 / 505 four-cylinder diesel engine in 1.9, 2.1 and 2.5 litre capacities. Originally only available as four-door sedans (the later 2.5 also as a wagon), most of these went to taxi operators and few survive.

In the 2.8iS the Granada appeared in a far more honed form than standard; the 2.8-litre V6 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection produced 160 bhp at 5700 rpm, and 162lb ft of torque at 4300 rpm, permitting a top speed of 120 mph and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of only 8.5 seconds. Outstanding performance like that was often gained only at the expense of an excessive fuel consumption, but that was not the case with the 2.8iS which managed a creditable 25 mpg overall. The 2.8iS was more than just a more power-version of the standard Granada; the stylish alloy wheels were specially designed to be shod with the new low-profile Michelin TRX tyres which made another major contribution to road holding and handling, as to a lesser extent did the stiffer anti-roll bar and the variable rate springs at the rear.

Not only did Ford pay more attention to the high performance aspect of the new Granada, it ensured that the new car could compete with what used to be considered more prestigious rivals, and items such as radio, centralised door locking and electric windows were standard on the L, G L, and S models.
