The LTD was launched as Ford's new flagship model, replacing versions of the imported US Galaxie.

It marked a bold initiative by Ford, determined to capture the local top of the range market and become the mainstream luxury limousine of choice for government and business, but Ford were not the only Australian car company heading down that road, General Motors gave up the Impala in favour ot the Aussie built Holden Statesman, and Chrysler began the manufacture of the "Chrysler by Chrysler".

Happy to alter the basic structure of Falcon/Fairlane and absorb the cost in the pursuit of market share, the LTD represented a stretching of the chassis, acquiring more length most noticeably in the rear doors and roof.

Powered by arguably the best engine going around at the time, the Cleveland 351ci, the LTD may have been a little on the heavy side to provide spirited performance, but as a swift executive limousine the car excelled.

But the FA got off to a rather shaky start. A crippling production strike at Ford's Broadmeadows plant put paid to the company's plans for a big production run during the first year of manufacture.

But once these problems were sorted, the FA LTD (and Landau) began selling in the numbers Ford had anticipated, and production grew to between 3000 - 4000 per year.

Interior appointments were of the finest that could be fitted, and so well-equipped were the cars that the options list was almost negligible. Most people assume that the LTD name was derived, as for the US equivalent, from the term Limited, or alternatively Lincoln Thunderbird Division.

Our research indicates that, in Australia, the letters were changed to reflect something a little more meaningful - the acronym instead standing for "Lincoln Type Design" and was a measure of Ford Australia's aspirations for the car.

Once again, a two letter code was used to differentiate the models. It is immediately apparent that although the basic form of the car is based on the XA/XB Falcon and the ZF/ZG Fairlane, Ford made efforts to move the LTD up-market, both in scale and style. The car featured a distinctive grille with head lamps hidden behind vacuum operated doors. Tail lamps appeared full width at the rear, but design regulations prevented them from being sequential in operation, and the wheel trims, while proving to be vulnerable, added to the impression of style.

The 121.0 inch (3085mm) wheelbase afforded a huge amount of interior space, and Ford referred to the LTD as "a true limousine design". There was even a limited edition town car manufactured, which included bonnet, bootlid and body style striping, Town Car badge work and a colour-keyed cavalry twill vinyl roof. The Town Car was available in either Burgundy or Classic Grey. Inside there was a black leather key ring, Knirps folding umbrella and an under dash stowage bin.

Being released in August, 1973, some months before the XB GT Falcon, the LTD also has the distinction of introducing four wheel disk brakes onto the local Australian market. Selling for $7700, it was considerably less than comparable imports and so, at that price point, caused quite a sensation on release. While officially titled the FA, the first LTD was also known as the P5. The FA/P5 was manufactured between August 1973 and September 1976, and 7003 were produced.

This motor car is the ultimate marriage of power and elegance. A beautiful machine inside a work of art. I've owned my Apollo Blue P5 for 11 years and she never fails to take my breath away and turn heads where ever she goes. Wouldn't part with her for the world!

It would be nice if the authors of this story changed the heading descriptor to "Ford LTD P5" as there never has been a FA LTD. Also, exact production numbers are 5890 P5 LTD sedans and 1385 P5 Landau's.

One of the best engines ever made and that V8 gurgle.
My P5 is unrestored in mint condition, what a cruiser, loves to sit on 70MPH.
Much better than the P6 with loads more power and a true GT dash.
Not many of these classics left!

im proud to say ive got a landau and two p5 LTDs, there are not many cars out there that can get better than these luxury limos, start with the front, unique design obviously influenced by the U.S 71'LTD but refineing it again, the sleek long body with long quarters and the only car to come out with fins in aus thru the 70s, great eng/trans combo as same as gts,and ofcourse the tramp rod disc brake rear end. lastly the tailight design, what more can you say. sorry to say to those who respect originality, my limos will be highly customised,as in st machine custom, see you at the summernats.........

I have owned a 1974 LTD for the past 10 years, black on black, they are the ultimate cruiser, a pleasure to drive, an abundance of room for the driver and passengers. These cars demand a sense of respect when on the road, who wants to take on a car that weights close to 2 tonne, it has the best of everything that Ford could offer at the time, with examples having GT parts supplied in the engine, i was lucky enough to have a 4mab crank and GT con-rods from factory. Even though it would be extremely hard to part with the car, why is it that such a unique vehicle isn't in the mid to high end price value of Aussie classics?

truly an EXCELLENT piece of work by FORD. Used to own one till the petrol prices went up and have regretted it ever since.
People just turn there heads when you go buy. When you go over a bump you glided over it without feeling a thing, it was liking driving on clouds smooth and quite and if you needed power it was there to back you up. I've read in a few other places that the production figure was 7008 instead of 7003. It's sad to think how many of these gorgeous cars have gone to car heaven over the past 35 years. The horn was definately unique, but since my mother sold ours to a junkyard about 12years ago I still havent heard another engine rumble quite so beautifully. If your lucky enough to find ads advertising the car from when it was released you'll find that out of all the amazing features it had for its time the most emphasised feature is the grab handles. In my opinion best car ever made.

These cars ooze opulence and whilst they are a large car by any standards, they drive in a manner more becoming of a significantly smaller model- swift, comfortable and quiet- still in 2008!
Fantastic example of Ford Australia history.

Never beena ford chick but this ones a real beauty. Got one recently and i love it!!! feel like im back in the 70's and she runs like a beauty...
