The Ghibli was seen as Maserati's answer to the Ferrari 275 GTB and the Lamborghini 350 GT. It was not as technically advanced as these two, but was a very attractive vehicle with its long lean shape.

It was capable of reaching 241 km/h with its 4.7 V8 motor despite having a body made of steel. Later engines were 4.9 litre V8's which increased the top speed achievable to 265 km/h.

It was smooth and relied on torque rather than power. Its option of auto transmission reduced performance somewhat, but most of these cars came in 5-speed manual.

The Ghibli's suspension was superb - it could corner accurately and steer precisely. Its leaf-sprung rear axle unfortunately resulted in an occasional bumpy ride.

For the U.S market Maserati launched the Spider model in 1969. It is rare and collectable and the most valuable Ghibli around. Four seater models were named the Indy and this model came onto the market in 1969.

Maserati ceased production of the Ghibli in 1973, with 1,149 being built plus 25 Spider versions.
