Introduction

First introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1973, the 230/4 replaced the 220 sedan which had been in manufacture since 1967.

The all new 4 cylinder engine developed 110hp and gave the sedan a top speed of 170 kmh.

The new body had a wider radiator grille and was slightly lower in the front - similar to those of the current S class models.

The vehicle shared the same suspension and other, (modern for the time) advanced safety features.

Overall a good, dependable and economical car, the four cylinder motor did not have the performance of the larger 6 and V8 powered cars.

I have had one for over 10 years now which I bought off my parents who picked it up new from the factory in Germany in 1974. It is a great car - very reliable and comfortable - loves the open road and has heaps of room for luggage, etc. Contemplating selling at the moment but finding it hard to do!!

I owned one as my first car. Did everything in it for 4 years and it was fantastic. It was great for the roads in Africa, tough and reliable. It polished up nicely too and it was very comfortable. Huge boot and it carried many heavy loads. I think I should buy one again as a classic.

i have a 1974 240D 4 speed manual. coffee in color with tan interior. its been in the family since new, and only has about 225,000 on the clock. its a great car to drive (although gutless on take off), and it still turns heads. only non original thing in it is a cd player. i'll never sell it.

I have enjoyed one of these for 13 years. Although the spec mentions only a 4 speed auto transmission, many UK (RHD) and European (LHD) were equipped with a 4 speed manual. Very few of these found their way to Oz. A modern classic, comfortable for day-t0-day driving as well as enjoyable for its classic image.

I had one of these for around 3 years, it was a great cruiser and looked the part, however the fuel consumption was on the heavy side, and the performance was pretty ordinary. Buy it for the looks and typical Mercedes quality, but not the performance.
