Introduction

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980, an uprated version of the 107 series roadster and coupe was presented; the equipment of the interior (including at long last the steering wheel) had been brought up to the standard of the S-Class sedans - as had the cars technology.

The former 3-speed automatic transmission was replaced by a 4-speed version, and the light-alloy engines of the S-Class were built into the 107 series models in slightly modified form. There were very few external differences to its predecessor; the main external cosmetic change being the addition of a black plastic rear spoiler.

Suspension upgrades included the use of a double wishbone axle with coil springs and anti roll bar at front and a diagnol swing axle at rear. Larger brake pads were also introduced, and with that their longevity increased by over 30%.

Interestingly, the new model 500SL and SLC's engine developed the same horespower rating as the legendary 300SL from almost 30 years prior. Even acceleration times were near identical, the new model SL and SLC beating the older model by only .6 of a second, attaining 0 - 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.

As with the SL, this was the first model SLC that allowed the owner to option ABS.

i found a 1978 450 SLC 5.0 which shows "500 SLC" "5.0" on the boot lid... the owner says it's a 450 series, so how come the boot lid shows 500?? I am confused. Can someone clarify this. Moreover, the VINumber 107 026 12 xxx is for a 500 series says my MB car dealer...

The 107026 (5 litre SLC) were sold as a 450SLC 5.0 from 1978 to 1980 and as a 500SLC from 1980 to 1981. The were no SLCs produced after 1981. It was the 107046 (5 litre SL) which sold as a 500SL from 1980 to 1989.

i am confused as to the production years of the 500 slc...some sites clearly state production ended in 1981, others state the last ones were produced in 1989...i am specifically refering to the 500SLC COUPE, not the SL CONVERTIBLE.. *** n anyone clear this up....?? many thanks, charles a.

The quoted 0 - 100km/h acceleration time is actually for the earlier 450SLC (with 4.5 litre engine and 3 speed auto). The first of the 5 litre SLCs introduced late in 1977 was badged 450SLC 5.0 (which retained the 3 speed auto) and managed 0 - 100km/h in around 7.7 seconds. The 500SLC introduced in 1980 (with 4 speed auto) accelerated from 0 - 100km/h in around 7.2 seconds. The total production number of 5 litre SLC (type 107.026) was 2769 of which 1636 were the 450SLC 5.0 and 1133 were the 500SLC.
