Introduction

The first WRX was launched in 1992 as the (far) hottest version of the very-ordinary Impreza sedan. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 16-valve boxer engine and putting all 240 horsepower to ground via the permanent 4-wheel drive, it immediately established itself as true drivers vehicle and modern classic.

During the following 8 years, Subaru have upgraded it gradually, from the original WRX to the final Version VI, gaining recognition from all over the world as the best A-to-B car and possibly the best driver's car as well.

The WRX series reached its peak in STi Version IV of 1998, although the Version V and VI have continued to improve on more minor details such as aerodynamics and cooling.

With 280 hp and 260 lbft on tap, it could sprint to 60 mph from rest in 4.6 seconds and top 150 mph. Sharp steering, lots of grip and highly controllable made it hard to be beaten in terms of driving fun.

Its main arch-rival was the Lancer GSR, which had vastly improved since the "revolution" made in Evolution IV. An instant classic, the WRX is undoubtedly a great buy but common sence should be used when appraising a second hand vehicle.

Such is the nature of the WRX that many have been driven hard, and the difficulty young drivers have in getting insurance on the car may have lead to second rate repair work.

I agree that the WRX (and Sti) are modern day classics. It will probably take a while for the WRX to become truly collectable though some such as the 22B and the original 2 door Sti have already started. Rarer WRXs will obviously be more collectable including early Club Spec models and perhaps even the rare 4 speed autos! The classic shape will be the most collectable followed by the peanut eye shape and perhaps even bug eye!
