With Christmas just around the
corner, most car clubs have by
now held their Show n' Shine
and Concours events, so getting
one's fix of Classic Car sheet
metal was going to be a challenge.
Thankfully the Cortina Mark One
Owners Club of Australia were
holding their Christmas get-together
in the tranquil settings of Como
Gardens, The Basin. The Capri
Car Club were on to a good thing,
they also taking the time to
drop by and check out the wonderful
Cortina's on display, including
the extremely collectable GT's.
There was a time, years before
the era of the GT Falcon, when
the Cortina’s really did
rule the road. They were the
first to conquer "The Mountain" (the
previous “Great Race” events
being held at Phillip Island,
Victoria), going on to win back-to-back
Bathurst victories for three
years running. They are today
as highly prized as they were
back then. Click
here for the Armstrong 500
race results from 1963, the year
of the " Cortina GT". |

We are big fans of the Jaguar, particularly the
E-Type, and we were certainly not disappointed
when attending this years concours d' elegance
held by the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria at Wesley
College, Melbourne. There was a fine array of all
things Jaguar, and the turn out of E-Types was
simply stunning.
Much has been said over the years
about the beauty of Jaguars, and particularly of
the E-Type. When a car sets your heart racing -
just by looking at it - then you know it must be
special. Seeing so much beautifully crafted sheet-metal
assembled in the one spot sent shivers up the spine.
Simply put, we want one. |

When driving out to the 2006 Leyland
P76 Owners Club concours, I asked the wife
what her favourite memory of the car is. As a then
teenage girl with a healthy interest in boys rather
than cars, it seems a shame that all she can remember
is throwing up in the back seat of her fathers
metallic green P76. For me, it has always been
the attraction of a boot that can hold a 44 gallon
drum, few cars can make such a claim to fame. And
on attending the 2006 concours, it became evident
that most owners are indeed very proud of their "boot",
most open to reveal the cavernous space. But could
it really hold a 44 gallon drum? Then we came across
a wonderful example, of course with boot open,
and inside a 44 gallon drum. I should never have
doubted it, and on closer inspection I reckon there
was in fact still room for a couple of sets of
golf clubs! |

The Australian Porsche 356 Register held their
annual national concours d' elegance at Como Park,
South Yarra on Sunday, 26th November 2006. There
were over 100 Porsche 356's on display, along with
some early 911's and other significant Porche's.
We give the 356 a "Five Star" rating
for collectability, and with good reason. A car
this well designed, and steeped in so much history,
is arguably a safer investment than real estate
or shares. But then, given the value of many on
display, you would need to sell your house to be
able to afford one. |

There were more than 200 cars in attendance at
this years "Mini Celebration", which
was, as you would expect, everything Mini. The
2006 event celebrated the 45th anniversary of the
Mini's launch here in Australia (March 1961), although
it took another 5 years for the Moke to arrive
on our shores. That same year (1966), a Cooper
S driven by Bob Holden and Rauno Aaltonen won the
Bathurst 500, the marque going on to take out the
first nine places outright! |

The Alfa Romeo Car Club of Victoria picked a sensational
venue for their 2006 Show N' Shine. There were
over 100 Alfa's on display covering the majority
of models, and with other Italian marques joing
the fun including examples from Lancia, Fiat, DeTomaso
and Ferrari there was plenty to satisy anyone appreciative
of "art on wheels", let alone fans of
Italian sports car exotica. Best of all entry was
free! |

The Morris Minor Car Club of Victoria put on a
wonderful display of Morris Minors at their display
day held at Carribean Gardens in suburban Scoresby.
Plenty of sedans were showcased, the vast majority
in pristine original presentation. There were a
few modified iterations, and best of all some wonderful
"Woodie" Station Wagons, along with utilities
and other curious vehicles. Thankfully the marque
has a solid following, and we were pleased that
these motoring classics were obviously still so
wonderfully pampered by their owners. Judging by
the Morris Minor's longevity, current owners are
simply custodians for future generations, something
we are sure they are more than happy to fulfill. |

The EH Holden Car Club of Victoria held another
sensational event at Albert Park. We counted over
50 fabulous EH's and a couple of EJ's, some modified
while others were original and stock. Great weather
made the event well worth attending, the EH stretch
limo being a stand out amoung other highly rated
and now very collectable early Holdens. Judging
by the number of people in attandance this year,
the EH is certainly enjoying a upsurge in interest. |
