The Swedish Grand Prix

The 1974 Swedish Grand Prix, sponsored by Texaco, provided a major fillip to the Tyrrell team. With Jackie Stewart's retirement Tyrrell signed-up two virtual newcomers to Grand Prix racing for 1974: 24-year-old South African Jody Scheckter and 29-year-old Frenchman Patrick Depailler. Amazingly, the pair were quickest in practice, Depailler on pole position with Scheckter alongside, and Scheckter led the race from start to finish. Depailler held third place behind Ronnie Peterson's John Player Special/Lotus 72-Ford for eight laps, but when a drive-shaft failed on the Lotus he moved into second place behind his team-mate and the Tyrrell pair scored a magnificent 1-2 victory.

This photo was taken only seconds after the start of the 1974 Swedish GP, and shows Jody Scheckter taking the lead in his Tyrrell 007 from team mate Patrick Depailler and the black JPS Lotus 72 of Ronnie Peterson. Scheckter and Depailler went on to score a convincing 1-2 victory for the Tyrrell team.
