Body

General Construction. - Standard : steel and aluminium : non-corrodible steel capped aluminium panels; detachable hood and side screens. Windscreen : movable, with frame, folds forward onto bonnet ; bottom mounted electric screen-wiper. Station Wagon : hardwood frame, aluminium panels. Doors : rubber buffered and equipped with locks and winding window control. Windscreen : fixed ; bottom mounted electric screen wiper.

Controls.- Freewheel : by ring on right hand side of floor. Gearbox : main, lever in centre ; transfer, lever at right of main lever. Ignition switch : in centre of main light switch on instrument panel. Mixture : on right of dash below instrument panel. Slow running : below right hand side of instrument panel. Starter switch : below left hand side of instrument panel.

Instruments.- Located on panel in centre of dash ; speedometer and fuel gauge at right, ammeter, oil and ignition warning and mixture lights in centre, lighting switches and lead lamp socket at left.

Brakes

System.- Foot ; four-wheel Girling Hydrastatic ; Hand : Girling mechanical, on transmission output shaft.

Drums. - Wheel : internal diameter, 10 in. + .004 in. Transmission : internal diameter, 9 in. + .004 in. Release wheel : by removal of wheel nuts, wheel and three setscrews per drum ; transmission, by unscrewing six drum retaining nuts.

Shoes. - Number : two per drum. Interchangeability : wheel, leading to leading, etc. Foot action : hydraulic with no pull off springs, the shoes being held in light contact with the drum by a compression between pistons of the wheel cylinder ; bias tension at pivot end locates shoes and almost balances out pressure of compression between pistons; lining of leading shoe split transversely, spring loaded plunger in leading shoe ensures high-spot contact between lining and drum to prevent grabbing in off position. Hand action : wedge and roller expansion through plunger engaging with shoe webs.

Linings. - Material : Ferodo MR.19. Dimensions : wheel length {8(13/32)} in., width {1(1/2)} in., thickness 3/16 in. : transmission, length {7(17/32)} in., width {1(1/2)} in., thickness 3/16 in.

Adjusment. - Foot : automatic, the light compression spring between the pistons in the wheel cylinder governing the necessary mean shoe-drum "clearance". Hand : mean shoe-drum clearance nominally equal to two clicks from hard setting of square shanked adjuster emerging from the front of the anchor plate : with handbrake in the fully released position, turn adjuster clockwise till shoe contact drum, then unscrew adjuster two clicks and apply handbrake hard to centralise shoes ; free lever movement in "off" position equal to one or two notches obtained by adjustment of the adjuster rod connecting lever to bellcrank.

Pedal Mounting. - On splined spindle bushed in chassis side member ; diameter of spindle .935 in. - .001 in., internal diameter of bushes .938 in. - .0005 in. ; spindle carries short lever at opposite end engaging with master cylinder piston rod.

Master Cylinder. - Type : Hydrastatic ; piston operated through short rod making cup and sphere contact with piston ; free movement of piston rod, 1/16 in. (measured on rod) obtained by undoing locknut and turning fork-end till required movenent is given.

Supply Reservoir. - Location : before vehicle number 861000, on engine side of dash ; later models, on right hand chassis side member adjacent to petrol tank.

Hints. - 1. With wheels removed and linings just rubbing, the drums can just be turned by hand. 2. Supply tank should be maintained three-quarters full. 3. Set pedal stop on chassis to limit upward travel of pedal ; pedal at upper limit whet pedal rod pinch bolt boss centre line is flush with the top of the chassis. 4. To bleed, top-up supply reservoir, attach bleeder pipe to bleeder nipple - at 12 0'clock on each brake plate, submerge free end of pipe in brake fluid, un screw bleeder nipple about three quarters of a turn, and pump brake pedal slowly till fluid from pipe is free from air bubbles, then tighten bleeder nipple. Take care to maintain fluid level in reservoir. 5. If fluid level falls excessively or frequently, inspect for and rectify leaks in system.

Carburetter

Type. - Downdraught, bi-starter ; located at right hand side of engine.

Supply. - Petrol ; by right hand side dash mounted electric pump incorporating filter. Filters : two, one in pump and one in carburetter ; pump filter inspected by unscrewing brass hexagon nut in bottom of pump ; carburetter filter inspected by undoing banjo union. Air : through air-cleaner and silencer of oil-bath and woven steel mesh type ; serviced by cleaning oil bowl and gauges with petrol or paraffin and refilling with engine oil every time engine oil is changed, or in field work and very dusty conditions, twice daily. Capacity : 2 pints.

Adjustment. - Jet level : by thickness of washers between flange of needle seating and top of float chamber ; thickening washers lowers level and vice versa. Choke tube ; detachable ; size 23. Jets : main, 107.5 ; air correction, 160 ; pilot, 45 ; starter air, 5.5 ; starter petrol, 135 ; air bleed, 1.5 ; speed 50. Slow running : by throttle stop screw and idling mixture control screw (both knurled screws behind throttle lever above flange) ; fairly fast idling speed with engine hot ; commence with idling mixture screw out about {1(1/2)} turns ; screw out (anti-clock) idling mixture screw until engine begins to hunt ; screw in (clock) until hunting disappears ; adjust throttle stop screw to gibe idling speed of about 500 r.p.m ; if hunting recommences screw in idling mixture control screw until idling is perfect.

Chassis

Frame. - Type : straight, all welded box type side-members and five cross-members ; front and rear cross-members extended to form bumpers and mountings for winch or tool bar.

Suspension. - Front and rear by semi-elliptic underslung springs ; anchorage by rubber bushed shackles to chassis with swinging link at rear end ; bump deflection limited by rubber bump-blocks at front, and bump-blocks and check-straps at rear ; non-adjustable telescopic dampers front and rear.

Front Springs. -
