In Baltimore, a fire raged for about 30 hours and destroyed over 1,500 buildings.
1967

Hobart Bush Fire: One of the most disastrous days in Australia's history occured on this day in 1967 when bushfires consumed much of the south-east of Tasmania, and penetrated to within 2 kilometres of the centre of Hobart, in the process killing 62 people. High temperatures, high velocity winds and dry terrain made the firefighters job impossible. Winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour drove flames down Mount Wellington on to Hobart. Hundreds were hurt and losses included 1,400 buildings and 1,500 cars. Amoung the animals killed were an estimated 1,400 cattle, 50,000 sheep, 25,000 poultry and 900 pigs. Losses were estimated to be in the vicinity of $40 million.
