Automotive Dictionary: Depth Gauge

Throughout this site we use many technical terms, and given the breadth of readership our site enjoys, sometimes we are remiss and incorrectly assume everyone knows what we are referring to. For those that do not, here are some explanations of the technical terms use.

Depth Gauge

Depth Gauge
An instrument used for measuring the depths of depressions below a surrounding surface. A simple depth gauge is used to check that the wear on tyres is within legal limits. Where a spark-plug is directly above a piston, another type of gauge can be used to determine TDC accurately by setting and marking two equal positions on either side of TDC.
