The Year of Group A Specifications



The new rules for 1985 were based on the European formula and brought the cars back, closer to the manufacturers' specifications. The BMW, always outgunned under the old rules, was now a force. Brock, together with new sponsors Mobile, debuted the Group A Commodore at Sandown and won. For the Commodore, pickings were fairly lean as it was severely handicapped by the new minimum car weights, which were tied to engine size. For the first time in over 10 years, Holden was not considered likely to take the laurels at Bathurst, especially as Tom Walkinshaw had brought to Australia three XJS Jaguars that had dominated the European scene.

One Jag was out early and Walkinshaw's own car had oil problems in the latter stages of the race, losing two laps in the pits and ultimately finishing third. But the story of the race belonged to Brock. He lost a windscreen and rear window while chasing the leading Jag. In the concluding stages of the race he fought back to pass the second-placed Snitzer BMW and was closing on the leader when the timing chain broke.
