Ariel | Pre War British Sports Cars

One or two special sporting models were built by the famous Selly Oak concern, based on the popular 10-h.p. chassis, and acquitted themselves well in the reliability trials of 1924-25. In the main they differed very little from the standard models, with the exception of a tuned engine and a lightweight two-seater body. The 1,097-c.c. (60x97-mm.) power unit had side-valves, and a cone clutch took up the drive through a separate gearbox to a conventional spiral-bevel rear axle. Suspension was by quarter-elliptic springs all round.

The Ariel was an excellent little car in many ways, and was extremely economical to run. The concern, however, tended more and more to concentrate on their motor-cycles, and eventually abandoned motor-car production altogether.
