Jappic | Pre War British Sports Cars

Touring the middle 'twenties, when record-breaking was a fairly profitable undertaking, Jarvis & Sons (Wimbledon) built a very interesting cycle-car called the Jappic, intended for sportsmen who wished to have a crack at the under-500-c.c. records. It was powered with either a 350-c.c. or a 500-c.c. o.h.v. J.A.P. single-cylinder air-cooled engine. Drive was via a three-speed motor-cycle-type gearbox by chain to a solid back axle. Suspension was by quarter-elliptic at the front, and reversed quarter-elliptic at the rear.

The 350-c.c. car had gear ratios of 6, 8 and 12 to 1, and had an astonishing performance for a machine of only a little over 2-h.p., nominal rating. Several international records fell to the Jappic, and it can truthfully be said that it was a most unique vehicle – as it could be argued that there was no other car manufactured and sold solely for the purpose of attacking records, with the possible exception of a small 350-c.c. vehicle known as the Vitesse.
