Introduction

The Landau was a coupe version of the LTD, based on the Falcon hardtop, and was Ford Australia's first Aussie designed luxury two-door coupe. It retained the frontal treatment of the full size LTD with its disappearing head lamps and the full width tail lamps.

The rear quarter window was altered, being shorter and squarer than that of the normal hardtop, and all came with vinyl roofs. Another unique feature in the interior was the fitting of individual bucket seats in the rear, rather than a bench. Mechanically the Landau was the same as the XB Falcon GT, although it was by design 130kg (286lb) heavier.

The list of standard inclusions was extensive for the time, and included full instrumentation, air-conditioning, inertia reel seat belts, power windows, power steering, radial ply tyres, electric rear window demister, fully reclining bucket seats, carpeted interior and boot, four wheel disc brakes and vacuum operated hide-away front headlights.

Although Ford would contine with production of the LTD, unfortunately the Landau ceased production in 1976 after failing to realise the expected sales success. Perhaps the practicality of a two-door car of such large proportions was at odds with the energy crisis that was getting plenty of publicity at the time.

Despite the bad publicity given the percieved "petrol guzzlers", the Landau was a true world class automobile. Motoring journalists of the time praised its quietness all the way to 70 miles per hour, some claiming it to be the quietest car they had ever driven, it even winning a comparison with the S Class Mercedes.

And it is for that reason we rate the car so highly as a classic collectable. Blessed with the sublime powertrain of the XB GT, and built in such few numbers, there are only a hand full of Falcon GT's that will prove a better investment in Aussie muscle cars. Simply put, a case of the ironic becoming the iconic.

Just felt a need to put a date on this post as to provide updated info on the Landau.
I own a 1974 Landau, Apollo Blue with black vinyl roof and black interior.
Have owned it for about a month now.
Some of the previous replies here have said they came with 302 engine and 4 speed manual which is wrong.
They are the same as the XB Falcon GT just a bit heavier.
351 engine, FMX Auto trans, 9" LSD.
GOOD ones are available for around $50k and expect to pay much more for a concourse car.
There has been an attempt at building a register of all cars which are still 'alive', I think it lost momentum a couple of years ago at approximately 400 cars. Making them very rare Aussie muscle.
If you're looking for one, good luck & beware the usual rust! :)

Hi Grunt. Hard to say without pictures. I know of one in Queensland Blue/White trim that has just been fully painted (back to metal) and he is struggling to offload it for $20k. There is another one on carsales / ebay which is Gold and he cant get a bite at $20k. The market has changed and long gone are the days of crazy prices. I got mine for $15k only a year ago.

Just purchased my 2nd Landau today, my 1st was in 1982 & sold it due to lack of knowledge and was young n stupid.. Not so with this baby!!!, we purchased today (25/03/2011), she all original apart from a1/2 reasonable paint job someone attempted to apply..... This on is a 1974, has new transmission sports suspension up front with very very little rust. she is Bronze in color with black leather roof... the interesting part with this particular car is the back seat is a rarely made intergrated 3rd seat with the 2 distingtive buckets seats in the rear.... we have the original huge wheel trims as well as spare more flat set of trims.. all we did was give her a good bath & polish up the roof and had heads turning all over the place on the Ring Rd here in Melbourne, we are the 3rd owners of this Grand ole Ford and if you wish to be the 4th, anythings for sale at the right price, but i do have to say.. The landau is a 1st Class Luxury Lounge on wheels

You know, you do some dumb things sometimes and one of them was getting rid of my pride and joy in 1986 for an overseas holiday, it was not going at the time(engine issues), but pretty much immaculate condition inside & out, apollo blue with dark blue vinyl roof,(originally white roof) parchment interior, and professionally fitted 460ci & C6, saw it once a few years back in traffic in Surrey Hills Melb and tried to catch it, would have bought it back on the spot had I caught it, wasn't to be, hope it's being well looked after...

i bought my landau back in '97 for a mere $4700 in mint condition. it has since been stolen but i was very lucky to get it back(minus wheels, tailshaft, and other various parts). I got it back on the road and the motor is as sweet as ever. What a great car it has been to me and it would be very hard to part with her. i love my '74 landau

G,day all the landau owners and lovers, iv been tracing and finding out any info on these sports coupe for some time now and the exact number of these vehicles left remains uncertain, otherwise approx 4 years ago, for australian viewers there was a car show starring glen ridge aired on sundays that had a preview on the ford landau, so far the stats released from this show claiming there are just over 300 registered landau coupes in australia. The amount of unregistered is unknown. The exact number of landaus exported to england and the U.S is also unknown. Unfortunatly It seems most of the 1385 built had fallen victim to rust and also salvaged for spares. Being a ford junkie i managed to purchace a good shell that will get the pro st theme. im sure you'll notice this one. The ford landau is possible the greatest car produced in australia and definetly ford australias finest design...................... 9.8.09

I owned one for about a year here in the uk, bright yellow with black vinyl roof. Bought it with a blown head gasket which i repaired and added an offenhauser inlet, cam followers and pushrods. Used it as my wedding car but had to sell because of a lack of spares. Sold it to a guy near Braintree Essex back in 1997. Wherever i drove it i got loads of admireing looks, possibly because of the huge rear wheels and tyres it had fitted. Happy days!
