Introduction

The HX arrived in July 1976 as the Australian automotive industry concentrated on meeting new anti-pollution requirements.

There was no Monaro coupe in the new HX line-up, but the name was emblazoned on a single, extroverted GTS four door.

Its bright colours, large GTS decals, colour-keyed mirror and bumpers, integrated body-coloured spoiler options and optional bonnet black-out made it the most distinctive of all four door Monaros.

A substantial, long distance grand tourer, it retained the longevity and built-in toughness of the HQ series while adding greater comfort and extra appointments.

These included a new multi-function column stalk that replaced the floor-mounted dipswitch, controlling headlight high/low beam as well as windscreen wipers and washers.

Had a HX GTS Coupe. Thats right HX. They say none were made. It was beige in colour with blackouts on the bonnet and red GTS stickers all factory with service book and owners manual. It had HX on the id plate and wipers on the indicator stalk and HX grill. It was around 1983 when i had the car. It was very rare back then and everybody was wondering how it come about. It was v8 but can't remember if it was Auto or do it yourself, 5.0lt or 4.2lt. Only had it a couple of months. I just had a Barbados green 308 manual HQ GTS coupe with 49000miles before the HX. The HQ looked better but the HX drove better. I think it was built for a big wig at GMH from memory.

Hi Guys, I have a Contessa Gold and Black HX GTS Monaro, I have the 308, Turbo 400 and limited slip diff. Chamois interior. My dash mounted clock still works and I have had it since I was 19years old. I have therefore had ownership of it for the last 27years. My wife and kids love it. Sadly it too has a bit of car cancer and is in need of a restoration. The original owner ordered the colour and interior. And if you have not noticed in this web site the HX Coupe is referred to as a Monaro which it is not nor is the 1978 HZ GTS. Both cars do not have the Monaro badge and whether we like it or not Holden decided (they own the name) that neither car should carry the name. Any broshures or references to the name Monaro are to be deemed print errors. I have a letter written to me 20 odd years ago from Holden stating the same.
