The 280SE 3.5 luxury coupe and convertible were introduced
at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1969. The basic body style
actually dated back to the 1961 220SE model, and it was
only slightly altered.
The engine, however, was the most advanced one produced,
with transistorised ignition, three phase generator, and
Bosch electronic fuel injection. Such accessories as stereo
, automatic transmission
windows were all standard.
Upholstery was of real leather and the elegant wood trim
was especially selected. The new V8 engine, displacing
3,499 cubic centimeters and developing 200 horse-power
was brand new and did not share any components with the
earlier and larger 6.3 litre unit.
With the cast iron block and aluminium head, it weighed
only 55 pounds more than the six-cylinder power-plant
and gave the cars acceleration rate of 9.5 seconds
to 100 km/h and maximum speed of 205 km/h.
These luxurious models were the last of the long line
of convertibles and coupes - and their beautiful bright-work,
classic lines and the hallmark Mercedes attention to detail
now make these vehicles very desirable and especially
today bring premium prices.
