Introduction

By no stretch of imagination could Renault's pre 1980 coupe range be described as an overwhelming success. But things were about to change, with the release of a new semi-sporting two-door series which the big French manufacturer made great efforts to combine good looks with technical refinement.

The old 15/17 series was derived from the Renault 12 while the Fuego (Fuego, means, for some reason or other, 'Fire' in Spanish - which is better we must point out than the translation of Pajero) was based on the basic layout of the 18, but with differences.

For instance, the 18's front running gear had been displaced by the layout from the 20 Diesel, featuring a more compact stub axle, with negative camber. For the Fuego range Renault also adopted a new power-assisted steering system with pistons in the centre of the rack, instead of a separate ram mounted on the top. The power steering layout had a ratio of 16.4: 1 whereas the lower-geared non-assisted installation was at 20.8: 1.

The Fuego range offered an almost bewildering choice of engines from 1.4 to two litres, mounted well ahead of the front suspension in the Renault style: Models included the:

Fuego TL: The 1397 cc cast iron ohv engine from the 18 TL/GTL, developing 96 bhp DIN (69 kW). Entry-level model, manual choke, & 4-speed gearbox, 155 SR 13' tyres, heated rear window, rear fog light, split/fold rear seat, cloth upholstery.

Fuego GTL: Middle of the range model, as TL plus 175/70 13' tyres, electric front windows, rev counter, height-adjustable steering wheel, front head restraints, analogical clock, central wheel covers, remote-adjustable drivers door mirror, laminated windscreen, opening rear quarter lights, H4 headlights, pre-installed radio kit, velour upholstery.

Fuego GTS and Automatic: the 1647 cc light-alloy ohv unit from the 18 GTS and 20 TL, developing 96 bhp DIN (69 kW).

Feugo TX and GTX: top-of-the-range models were powered by the 1995 cc light-alloy ohc 'Douvrin' unit from the 20 TS. Equipped with Renix (Renault-Bendix) electronic ignition the motor developed 110 bhp DIN (79.5 kW), and drive was through four or five-speed manual gearboxes, or a three-speed automatic. Equipment levels as per GTL, plus oil level gauge, power-assisted steering, optional 3-speed automatic transmission, plus rear wash/wipe, front fog lights, headlamp wash/wipe, 14-inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel rim, gearlever gaiter, handbrake lever gaiter, digital clock, passenger side door mirror, bronze tinted windows, luggage cover.

From 1982: the Fuego GTL obtained 5-speed gearbox. GTS got electronic ignition. GTS, TX and GTX got remote central locking. Optional 3-speed automatic transmission now available on TX and GTX. 1983: GTL got economy tune 73bhp 1647cc engine, 5-speed gearbox.

Renault Fuego
It was obvious to even the casual observer that Renault had made great efforts to produce a good-looking commodious body with an above average aerodynamic co-efficient. That the model was very easy on the eye, seated 4-5 adults with impressive head-room, and had a drag figure of 0.347 gave a graphic illustration of why the Fuego would become a great success.

The low drag characteristics were aided significantly by the steeply-raked windscreen which had a pantograph wiper. Surprisingly, the Fuego weighed about 220 Ib (100 kg) more than the four-door 18 saloon, turning the scales at 2227 Ib (1010 kg) to 2381 Ib (1080 kg) kerb weight, according to model. Wheelbase was 8.02 ft (2.445 metres); length 14.30 ft (4.36 metres), and like the 18 saloon Fuego had seating for 4-5.

The luggage compartment was reached through a large hatch in the style of the Porsche 924 (with which Fuego bore more than a passing resemblance), but it was not cavernous.

Hi , yes i had a 1600cc turbo too, great car, fwd too..the engine was londatudial ( mounted front to rear..but the gearbox,,,had the driveshafts comeing out the sides...very technical advanced, but no LSD? so if you put ya fooot down , she usta sometimes pull to the left, easy enoug to correct, just take foot of the gas, handled well for a solid rear axle beam, ..engine was reliable,,,,,,,bought mne from a garage.....the head was craked..:( knew this and managed to source a rolled turbo...took engine out and refitted it in mine....did it in 2 and half hours with help from a fork lift :$......never had any problems from that engine sigh in many years
Had her for over 8 years....had to weld in a rear nearside arch...and repair the off side fron arch to side wall....changed the rear hatch lid....(lucky i had spares from the rolled one...(and the rear lid didnt break weird).......rear calipurs were the main prob.....had to rebuild them in the end, was able to get parts kit ....supprising, spoke to a man who usta work for renaults......apparently the circuit boards under the dash..where the fuses were . *** ta alwasys go wrong...at renault he told me how..they were always getting customers come back with thease circuit boards gone wrong. I musta been lucky, or becose it was a B reg the work had already been rectified?.
1st gear was not needed ha.....really. and she gave quite good mpg...unless you toed it of course.......the bucket seats were cool...had to have the drivers re sown as years of people in out had been bad on the outside arm support.....it suprising how driving this car...no one ever drove close to me? maybe it was the big turbo on the sides of the door n boot? lol.
The enige i had was a carburated turbo
not the injected one
Renault did so many varient son engines
there was a 1600cc turbo injected engine......but the carb unti was good ..oh i had a intercooler split..but ad the spare from the rolled car.
Haveing that spares saved me lots ..i was lucky.....had the drivers seat belt play up too...took mine apart ...omg the springs inside.....one had snapped, so i made and fitted another sprung steel one.....(Bit annoying wen ya belt wont wind in on leaving car).
Had a wheel bearings go twice on near side?
oh and a trip to london...some goon thought it be fun to loosen my wheel nuts...when i got home....i had one wheel bolt left!!!!! no joke..i wondered what the odd noise was.
Maybe they tried pinching my wheels?
I painted the rear under floor too, removed the tank cleaned and painted,,,,,had some one break a rear light cluster too..on returning from a tesco carpark??? what is wrong with people? lucky again i had spares...sigh.....
good car and i miss it....sigh my dad sold it whilst i was away....as i wasnt using it...ad it was sitting on drive for a year near enough.....mum was nagging ...so he got rid of it :(
Oh well.....shame......i notice on here they dont mention the turbo?
nothing wrong with it, it was totally reliable.........:)

I had long admired the Fuego before I purchased a 2.0L GTX secondhand. I LOVED the style and quality of the car, unfortunately I never grew to like the spongy dead brakes with drums at the rear or the weird choice of ratios in the 5 speed box - much too low on the lower gears..as if it was meant for a 1.4L, plus the fact that the timing could not be adjusted or the strangely melted needles on the speedo and tach. I went scampering back to old Fiat 132's But now I want to buy one again - no fiat 132's left.

yes i had a 1500 turbo as welll
wow that car really flew for such a small engine ...
the turbo and the shape gave it very long legs at a very economical
cruise rate
very hard to find a suitable replacement with the room comfort and shape ....
not even renault have have one

I had two consecutive Fuegos. Very innovative build and components for the time, but could have done with ABS as it was a bit of a death trap in the wet (probably due to the tyres), otherwise handling was responsive and fun. When it had to be replaced in 2003 it was impossible to find anything modern of the same size, low profile, practical use of space and sporty looks.

I had a Fuego Turbo back in the early '90's. I loved the car. It was the second of what turned out to be three Renaults that I owned. White w/black trim, tan leather,European canvas sunroof, all options. Great handling! Long gone now,too bad. I'd love to have it back.
