Introduction
It is easy to see why the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was generally regarded as the best car in the world at the time - visually the car was imposing and gave an air of quality that was indeed matched by the build quality.
At the time, Rolls-Royce built only the chassis, leaving the body work to be finished by coach-builders according to a customer's specifications.
However the Silver Ghost had a marvellous powertrain, its straight-six engine employing a strong crankcase with 7 main bearings that virtually eliminated all vibration.
Being so quiet and smooth, it was named the "Silver Ghost". Reliability was another strong point, since every Silver Ghost was hand built to exacting standards.
Undeniably an elitist car - particularly in the 1920's, the Silver Ghost's chassis alone cost approximately US$5000 - or roughly 10 times that of a fully complete
Ford Model T.
