OK, it's obviously a Sandman:
but which model? Look closely at the left hand side of the tail-gate, notice
something (other than nice feet). The RTS badge gives it away as a HZ, but then
you would already know that if you had visited the HZ
Technical Specifications page, one of over 4000 pages of Unique and Classic
car information for the enthusiast at Unique Cars and Parts. |

EH
Car Club (Vic) Show 'n Shine @ Albert Park Lake
2006
The EH Holden Car Club of Victoria held another sensational
event at Albert Park. We counted over 50 fabulous EH's
and a couple of EJ's, some modified while others were
original and stock. Great weather made the event well
worth attending, the EH stretch limo being a stand out
amoung other highly rated and now very collectable early
Holdens. Judging by the number of people in attandance
this year, the EH is certainly enjoying a upsurge in
interest. |

Everything
you wanted to know about the Holden Grey Engine:
The trusty Holden "Grey" engine owes much to
the knowledge gained by GMH during the Second World War,
when they manufactured both aeroplane, boat and torpedo
engines for the war effort. The torquey, low stress "Grey"
was extremely flexible, economical and offered at the
time lively acceleration. An added benefit was that it
was easy to work on. With its success through the '50s
and early 1960's the grey engine was carried over into
each new model series with only minor modifications -
new camshaft, higher compression ratios, incorporation
of larger valves and throat surgery in the form of improved
carburettors. By the time the FB was released the capacity
was up to 138ci (2.26 litres) with a compression ratio
of 7.25 and an output of 75bhp (56 kW). We have now compiled
a comprehensive technical specifications on the Holden
Grey engines, and the cars that they powered, including
the 48/215, FJ, FE, FC, FB, EK and EJ |

Can
Volkswagen Beetle's Really Float?
We are not sure how many have tried, but we do know for
sure that the Volkswagen Beetle does float, for a time
anyway. Think we are wrong? Then you obviously haven't
checked out the latest addition to our Classic
Volkswagen TV Commercials. In fact, several people
have tried to float and/or boat their way across large
bodies of water with their Beetles, and it can be done
since the Beetle is such a well built car, and has excellent
seals. However the car pictured left had special double
seals on everything, including custom seals on cables
and shafts that were not intended to be absolutely water
tight. With these few modifications, it was able to successfully
navigate the English Channel! However our preference
for a "Channel Crossing" would always be the
wonderful Amphicar (for more information on the Amphicar
and other Classic Car's, check out our Classic Car gallery
pages). |

LPG
Autogas and Classic Car Compatability:
We were recently contacted via the " Ask
the Team" page as to the viability of converting
a treasured Holden HK to use Autogas. We are not experts
in this field, and so we contacted the guys at LPG Autogas
to find out. The answer was No, and Yes (depending on
if the HK had been converted to run on unleaded or still
required a lead additive). Click
here to read the full explanation from Peter Linahan,
the Technical Manager – Automotive and Applications
from LPG Autogas. By the way, we would like to thank
Peter for taking the time to write such a detailed report. |

The
Tunnel:
This tunnel in Russia is reportedly the longest in-city
tunnel of Europe. There is a river running over it and
water leaks at some points (motorists using Melbourne's
City Link tunnel will be familiar with this phenomenon).
When the temperature reaches -38 degrees (that's MINUS
38!) like it did during the last European winter, the
road freezes and the result is this incredible video
footage taken during a single day with the tunnel camera.
We dip our caps to the driver of the dual bus, how he
managed to keep the thing upright is amazing... Click

Jaguar
and MG Classic Car Ads:
As promised, we have added to our Classic Car movie archive
with some mid 1970's commercials from Jaguar and MG.
Featured commercials include one for arguably the most
popular and collectable of the 70's Jaguar's, the immortal
E-Type (when the announcer compares it to the music of
Bach and sculpture of Rodan, who are we to argue). Also
included is an ad for the brutal S-Type, and another
for the classic XJ. Click

Speed
Cameras - a listing for Victorian motorists:
With the Victorian government recently reducing tolerance
levels on speeding infringements, it got us to thinking
just how accurate is the Speedo on the average car?
To put it to the test, we purchased a Tom Tom Sat Nav
and linked it to the Speedo of the company Kia, less
than 12 months old and with only 12,000 k's on the clock.
Predictably, the Speedo in the Kia was inaccurate by
a whopping 9.8%, just under the 10% allowed by law.
This helps explain why truck drivers persistently travel
within a poofteenth of the company car's rear bumper
- our speedo reads 100 km/h when we are really traveling
at 89.7! Come trade in time, can we legitimately claim
the car to have traveled less than 90,000 k's when the
odo reads over 100? But most alarmingly how do we explain
to the authorities that their infringement system provides
zero tolerance but they allow new vehicles to take to
the road with wildly inaccurate Speedo's? Avoidance
is the best strategy, so we are pleased to be able to
provide a list of all known Victorian fixed speed camera
locations. Click
here to review the list, and if you can help out
with camera locations from other states please drop
us a line. Editors Note: The Tom Tom Sat Nav unit has
proved a wonderful companion, and comes highly recommended.
A comprehensive review will be posted shortly... |

RACV
Great Australian Rally:
A fantastic day was had attending the Victorian RACV "Great
Australian Rally" held on Sunday the 22nd January
at the Mornington Race Track. Oppressive conditions (with
the mercury climbing past 40C) were not enough to deter
many devoted Classic Car fans, impressive considering
very few were blessed with air-conditioning. Naturally
enough the shady spots around the grounds were snapped
up rather quickly. We would like to thank the many car
owners that we spoke to on the day, and hope to provide
more detailed information on some of the truly "Unique"
cars we spotted that day. Click
here to take a look at what was on display... |
