The engine number is stamped on the front of the block above the fuel pump
Body Prefix Number is stamped on the radiator support panel on the passenger side
After 1st January 1971 it was stamped on the passenger spring tower, parallel with the fender
Two I.D. plates: One located on passenger side bulk head after January 1973
Prior to that Ford started placing 8 holes in the firewall (for 2 tags) in September 1972
So some Setember 1972, all 10th 11th and 12 month 1972 XA's came from the factory with a single tag and with an extra 8 holes for the double tags.
Depending on where they put the single tag, some in middle of 8 holes and some to the right, usually there are still an extra 4 holes visable.
Remember the tags for 1973 and after are shorter so NONE of the 8 holes are used by the single tag
Decoding the Body Prefix Number:
All Falcon GT’s have the same engine number and Body Prefix number
Prior to 1971 Ford used a dual numbering system
They had a V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number) which was different to the body prefix number/engine number
The V.I.N. number as stamped on the front edge of the passenger side spring tower, and body prefix and serial number as stamped on the passenger side front of the radiator support panel
The body prefix number also corresponds to the number stamped on the I.D plate
From Jan. 1971 onwards, Ford went to the 3 way system
Body prefix and serial number as appeared on the I.D. Tag was the same on the engine and spring tower
