The 1960 British GP
The 1960 British GP started in sensational fashion when
Graham Hill stalled on the starting line. He got cracking 30 seconds later and went through the classic field like a whirlwind. On the 31st lap Graham had 90 percent of the field behind him. Then he passed world champion motor cyclist John Surtees (driving a works Lotus) to take third place. Six laps later Graham passed the number one Lotus driver
Innes Ireland. Then Hill set out after
Jack Brabham in his invincible Cooper. The British crowd roared itself hoarse as their moustachioed countryman relentlessly gained on the world champion. They longed for a BRM car to take the British GP. Lap after lap he was within striking distance.
Meanwhile John Cooper had been gesticulating madly for
Brabham to get a move on but he could not go any faster. On the 55th lap Graham passed him and proceeded to draw away. The BRM was handling better than the Coopers or the Lotuses and its extra power gave it the advantage. With six laps to go
Graham Hill passed the pits with a lead of several seconds. Then as he approached the lefthander just past the stands the crowd gasped as he bore down upon a slower car. Hill went off his line slightly to avoid the car he was lapping. He went out on to the grass, the car spun and his epic race was over. But the ovation that the English crowd gave him was fantastic, despite his error.
