Jesse James, who is believed to have been responsible for the first daylight bank robbery in the United States, was shot and killed by Robert "Bob" Ford (taking a bullet to the back of the head) at the James residence at 1318 Lafayette Street, St. Joseph Missouri. Over the span of 16 years, the James-Younger gang committed 26 holdups in ten states, leaving 14 dead. Although Ford killed James to collect the $10,000 reward, Ford was charged with murder and sentenced to hang. He was eventually pardoned and died in a bar brawl.

Richard Bruno Hauptmann was executed for the kidnapping and death of the son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh.

Lt. General Masaharu Homma, the Japanese commander responsible for the Bataan Death March, was executed in the Philippines.

Unabomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski was arrested. He pled guilty in January 1998 to five Unabomber attacks in exchange for a life sentence without chance for parole.
