Ford Lincoln
The Lincoln automobile quickly found favour with US presidents as their “motor” of choice, the earliest being a Lincoln Limousine being used by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924. In 1939 the company manufactured the V12 Sunshine Special as a purpose built Presidential vehicle, it being used throughout President Frankin D, Roosevelt’s tenure, then remaining in use until 1950. The Sunshine was replaced by the “Bubble Top”, it being used by Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and on one occasion Johnson, until it was retired in 1965.

SS-100-X

Tragically President Kennedy would choose a Continental convertible for his parade through the streets of Dallas, that particular vehicle being used from 1961 to 1977 – although extensive alterations were made following the incident, including the fitment of armour plating. The Secret Service purchased a convertible parade limousine custom built by Hess & Eisenhart of Cincinnati, Ohio from a 1961 Lincoln four-door convertible. Code named the SS-100-X, but by the time of the assasination the front of the car had been updated with the grille/headlight/bumper assembly from the 1962 model.

After the assassination, the limousine was returned to Hess & Eisenhart, where it was repaired and retrofitted with full armor and a fixed roof. It subsequently continued in service for the White House for many years. This world-famous car is now on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. A 1969 Lincoln was used by Nixon and a 1972 Lincoln used by Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. Cadillac has subsequently supplied the Presidential limousines in 1983, 1993, 2001, and 2004.
