Just bought a 1967 HR Special with a179X upgraded to 186 by GEM Engineering. It’s a manual 3 speed and goes well. Plan to lower and add sway bars for better handling.

my father had one. no good on dirt, rusted quite badly on the coast. Holden did replace it after 18 months. Not certain what they did but second one was okay, bigger engine? 179 to 186. big deal. couldn’t bore it out any further, otherwise u would be into the water jacket! no power down low. over square engines like that. that why never seen one towing a caravan. good cars thought

Grandfather had white 161 special.when he passed i got given it. I sold it to a mate, as i hated it, thought it an ugly thing! Ya see, i like fords, not holdens!!!

Yes, the HR Holden was my first Car.
Reliable. The only thing I can recall was I had to replace the gearbox once but other than that, it just kept on going. Never leaked a drop of oil.

I bought my HR 186 special new in 1967, I was 19 at the time. Some 45 years later I still have the car. It is in splendid original condition.
Never had any trouble with my old girl, just keep it regularly seviced.
Fact is its aging better than me !

I bought my second hand HR in 1977 for $1000.00 and I thought is was fantastic until it rained and you would get your shoes wet while you drove ,but the old girl still kept going all around nsw and queensland,what a great car.

Can anyone tell me if the chrome trim around the rear side windows (the one near the boot) off an hd wagon will fit an HR wagon?

Can someone please verify; I have a HR UTE & I’M ABOUT TO DROP A 350 CHEV IN, TWICE NOW I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT HOLDEN RELEASED 3 ONLY HR 307 V8’S IS THIS TRUE ?

My dad bought the HR Premier brand new and I was taught in it some 15 years later and I loved it. Colum *** was such a great experience and the reliability was fantastic.

mate i own an XF and a HR (not Ford or Holden biased). You obviously have no sense if you think Fords are more reliable than Holdens! The HR gets worked on only to make it better, apart from the diff that car is solid. The XF gets worked on because everything except the short motor is cheap and nasty. Crap steel, always leaks oil, weak as piss alloy head, I could go on forever! Get a real car… any pre VT Commodore (except maybe VB).

The HR is without doubt the best car that my family ever owned.In the whole time we had it [sixteen years] it only needed one engine replacement.
The front end was as strong as an ox and put a set of conventional tyres on it and she would cruise at 70 mph all day.
apart from routine servicing the car never had any major mechanical problems
Time eventually caught up with the old girl because of rust but while taking it for the last drive the column shift and gearbox were like the day it left the factory.
