I am buying a HG ute which has a 173 red motor. I always thought the 173 didnt appear until the HQ? The research I have done seems to back this up, stating that the HG ran the 161 or the 186. I would be less inclined to buy the ute if it has had an engine swap, as I'm looking for originality. What should I be looking for in regards to Engine numbers and such? I assume if the engine was changed, the ID plate would still have the original engine spec number? Is this number different between 186 and 173?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Commercials after the 6th month of 1971 had 173 and 202 engines in them . As HG Utes and Panel Vans were produced until October 1971 . I just wrecked a rusted out low mileage HG Ute with a 173 and they also get HQ style Shockers rather than the normal Delco Twist type ! Hope this helps James %28Monaro Muscle Parts%29
