Production of Subaru Passenger Vehicles

Origins:

Aeronautical research establishment 1917; aircraft manufacture 1931. After World War 2, Fuji Sangyo manufactured motor-scooters, omnibus bodies, stationary engines and railway rolling stock. The group was dissolved into 12 companies by Occupation Forces in 1950. The foundations of the Fuji Heavy Industries was made by six of the companies in 1953. Launch of the iconic Subaru 360 was in 1958.

First Mass Produced Model: Subaru 360 (1958)
First model exported to Europe: Subaru 1000 (1965)
Model most sold abroad (to 1979): Subaru 1600 Leone with 141,946 units exported in 1979 alone.
Number of employees (as at 1979): 13,300
Position amoung Japanese Manufacturers (as at 1979): 6th, with 2.5% of the Japanese market.
Position amoung exporters (as at 1979): 6th
Associates (as at 1979): Co-operation agreement with Nissan-Datsun.
Group Products (as at 1979): Cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, engines, aircraft and helicopters, aircraft components, marine engines, missiles, railway rolling stock, locomotives, agricultural and dockuard machinery.
Range (as at 1979): Subaru 1600 (four models), Subaru 1600 4WD (three models), Subaru 1600 Hatchback (three models), Subaru 600 (three models).
