                          Introduction

Although very much a French car,
the Peugeot 404 was actually designed by Italian Battista "Pinin"
                          Farina.
The build quality and strength of the Peugeot 404 was
superior to many, if not most, of its rivals.

                          The
suspension was capable of soaking up bumps on the roughest of roads,
it was fitted with an economical and bullet-proof 1.6
litre engine mated to a sturdy 4 speed
transmission (when
most rivals had only a 3 speed).

For the time it was also well equipped, featuring plenty
of stainless steel trim, a heater, enormous
brakes and
                          extremely comfortable seats.

Peugeot had already built a reputation for strength and
reliability following the Redex trials of the 1950's.

                          Naturally the locally
"built tough for Australian
conditions" Holdens were the favourites - but
it was the rugged little Peugeot 203, with its small
capacity 1200cc 4 cylinder motor that was to tame the
                          larger more powerful Aussie cars.

Astute Australians purchased the 404 and made the car
a success in this country, a success it was to enjoy all
                          over the globe.
In fact, production of the 404 was to
continue in Nigeria until 1987, such was its reputation
                          for strength and durability.
