Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car
The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia
30 June - 5 July, 2015 (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM)
The Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car [VIC] is from 30th June to 5th July, 2015 at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia. Celebrate Australia’s proud history of automobile design and engineering with this new exhibition at NGV Australia.
Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car reflects on the heyday of the Australian car industry by presenting some of our nation’s most iconic vehicles as objects of art and design. It also looks to the future of the automobile industry in this country and the shift from manufacturing, which has primarily serviced a local market, to being a global contributor through specialist expertise.
The exhibition traces the development of the family car from its earliest form, as a steam-powered ‘horseless carriage’, through to its present-day role as a major design object and highly refined and efficient means of transport.
It presents the stories behind the development of some of the great Australian vehicles and reveals the designers who styled them. The exhibition also celebrates the significant contribution Australian designers and engineers have made, and continue to make, to the car industry through specialist design capacity and expert knowledge.
Entry Fee for adult $15, family $41, child $7, member $11 and group discount $13.50.
